July 13, 2021 Book Releases and Reviews

This July 13 is an exciting day for book releases. There are some incredible graphic novels, non-fiction, romance, and science fiction novels being released today. We’ve got a few reviews, and even more suggestions of book releases we’re super excited to read.

The Adventure Zone: The Crystal Kingdom by Clint McElroy, Carey Pietsch, Griffin McElroy, Travis McElroy, and Justin McElroy

4/5

Another great addition to the TAZ graphic novel adaptations! Carey Pietsch’s artwork is as perfect as always. The story occasionally got bogged down in setting up some of the metaphysical explanations for the larger overarching plot. Still, I still thoroughly enjoyed this entry into the series.

The Icepick Surgeon by Sam Kean

3.5/5

A horrifying yet fascinating look at the crimes that have been committed in the name of science. Wildly ranging in topics from the more fun–buccaneer naturalist William Dampier–to the purely deplorable–Nazi “experiments,” lobotomies, and Tuskegee syphilis study. I learned a lot and found the book really interesting but the sheer horror of many of the topics made it hard for me to rate it more than 3.5 stars

We’ve already published a full review of A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers, which is also coming out on today. Some other July 13 book releases we’re super excited to check out include It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey, Jillian vs Parasite Planet by Nicole Kornher-Stace, While We Were Dating by Jasmine Guillory, and The Taking of Jake Livingston by Ryan Douglass
